Jan 01, 2023

Countless people across the country have missing teeth. However, to improve the lives of our patients, our dentist offers tooth replacement options that can revitalize your smile. Dental implants in Laguna Beach is a revolutionary tooth replacement treatment that guarantees stability, versatility, aesthetics, and functionality.

But for dental implants to serve you for a lifetime, you need to care for them from the moment you step out of our office daily. Post-surgery care is critical since it sets the stage for a healthy and functional tooth implant.

Therefore, our implant dentist in Laguna Beach has some important post-op instructions to help you care for your implants.

What to Avoid After Implant Surgery

Getting a new tooth is exciting; however, don’t get carried away and eat everything you used to eat. You might have to take the longer route and ease your way to your normal diet. After your gums and bones have healed, you can sink your teeth into your favorite meals.

After implant surgery, you need to be careful not to damage your implants since setting an implant after it has failed is not a walk in the park. So, you might need to skip the following foods:

  • Spicy foods such as hot peppers since can cause discomfort and pain.
  • Acidic foods such as lemons or tomatoes since the acidity levels can cause a burning sensation to your healing gums
  • Crunchy foods such as popcorn, chips, nuts, etc., since these foods can get lodged between your teeth, causing inflammation and pain; plus, they are difficult to chew
  • Sticky and chewy foods, such as gummy bears, bagels, and so on, have a knack for sticking to your teeth and between the spaces.
  • Tough foods such as steak, which requires a lot of biting and chewing force, can easily cause pain.
  • Cracked pepper should also be avoided since it can lodge between your teeth and cause inflammation.
  • Hot beverages and foods, such as soup, and coffee, can hurt your healing gums.

What to Eat After Treatment

After the implant surgery, your gums, jaw, and teeth will be delicate. That’s why caring for your implant after your surgery is vital. Some of the foods that you can indulge in after implant placement are:

  • Cold soups. Avoiding hot liquids is essential, but you can enjoy cold drinks and soups such as gazpacho or any other alternative.
  • Applesauce. You might not be able to sink your teeth in a juicy, crisp apple, but you can take some applesauce because it is packed with nutrients.
  • Smoothies. Smoothies should be your friend since they don’t need chewing and are highly nutritious.

As you keep on healing, you can decide to introduce some of the following foods:

  • Potatoes. This is a versatile food choice-it the kind of food you need, especially when seeking a variety.
  • Chicken, ground beef, or fish. You can choose these options when you need some protein since they are soft and highly nutritious.
  • Cheese, milk, yogurt. Dairy products are critical during healing since they contain protein and calcium.
  • Rice, pasta, soft bread, etc. These are excellent carbohydrate sources that you can introduce since they are soft.

How to Sleep After Your Implant Surgery

After you undergo implant surgery, sleeping might not be as pleasant as you’d expect. Finding the right position could be quite challenging. But as you already know, sleeping is necessary, especially if you wish to recover quickly.

So, your head has to be elevated to reduce the risk of pain and discomfort. When your head is elevated, blood flow to your gums will be reduced, thus reducing bleeding, pain, and discomfort.

Also, the swelling can go down much faster when your head is elevated. You can use whatever is comfortable to prop your head. Alternatively, you can use a recliner. You will have to elevate your head while sleeping three days after the implant surgery.

Cleaning the Dental Implants

Cleaning your dental implants is as essential as cleaning your natural teeth. There isn’t much difference: Here’s how you do it:

  • Brush each day using a low abrasive toothpaste and a soft-bristled toothbrush
  • Clean around and under the crown
  • Floss each day using an implant-specific floss
  • Use an oral irrigator recommended by our implant dentist in Laguna Beach
  • Clean the hard-to-reach areas with an interdental brush (nylon-coated)

Dental implants near you are highly effective but can fail when you don’t care for them. However, if you can care for them by following our dentist’s instructions, you will be okay. Contact our dental team at Laguna Family Dentistry if you need implants or have questions.
